I am Alonzo Van Aarde, born on 9th July 2002. I was raised in Cape Town, South Africa, I am the oldest son out of 6 children, Recently (last year 2020) I have matriculated in my home town, Mitchell’s plain. I never quite had a fixed job but I have had my fair share of holiday jobs in a shoe store it was called first stop shoes in a shopping complex close to home. In my free time I would work private jobs with my father and doing shop fitting and house renovations all over Cape Town. I loved helping my father out. It was also a way for me to have extra pocket money. I also worked at a Taylor blinds company, whereby the production of blinds called Taylor blinds in Montague gardens. I took part in various programs whilst at school, namely, in leadership development skills with a NPO called M.O.V.E and another called J.A.M, where I was taught to run my own business. This was done during my schooling, I have obtained certificates for these courses. These two courses was done over a period of 12 months, I was also an RCL members as well as a Prefect at my school. I am also part of a group called M.O.C (mission of Christ), where I furthered my leadership skills but in a more spiritual sense in doing so we take part in outreach programs and preach the gospel. I speak fluently English and Afrikaans. I am currently studying Japanese, because I am intrigued by it. I am computer literate, Microsoft enabled as well as Linux. I am also a musician. In my spare time, I teach people to play an instrument and also to read music. I also write my own music as well as produce music. I use this skill to help many young and upcoming artists I work with an Organization called My Child Is Your Child, Creating a platform where young people can showcase their talents and make something out of themselves. I live in a rough community where children are killing children and I’ve joined this organization to make a change in a community through various forms of art. My hobbies are, playing different sporting activities, going to the gym, writing music and drawing portraits.
Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, I am a 22 year old who could be described as ambitious, hardworking, and a perfectionist. I enjoy being challenged with new tasks, as I believe discomfort allows one to grow and learn. I enjoy teamwork, but I am also capable of working on my own. I believe that communication is an important aspect of any relationship, especially professional ones, as it doesn’t leave any room for errors or misunderstandings. Therefore, I pride myself on being a skilled communicator. I am organised, goal-driven, and I find it very hard to set a task down once I have started. I may not have the most extroverted personality, but I do enjoy socialising with others in any setting. I recently graduated with a BA in English and Communication Science. While completing my degree, I worked as an editorial intern at Highbury Media, where I gained first hand experience in editing, publishing, and social media management. I was also able to sharpen my writing skills, which came in handy as I went on to work as a freelance writer for ClubX Magazine for over a year. Even though I do not have years of experience behind me, I am, however, eager to learn. And a fresh mind is always a benefit. When it comes to my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, and painting. I am also currently learning Italian and intend on tackling many other foreign languages.
"All things are possible" I love the outdoors, travelling, animals and people. I was an ardent hiker, and this allowed me to visit some of the most amazing hiking trails in South Africa. What inspires me most is the ability to positively impact the lives of others through the plethora of skills I have acquired over the many years of experience. I have the ability to add value wherever I am placed. I am energised by strategy, new challenges, and the search for the most efficient and impactful solutions. My career began in education. As an educator I enjoyed the children. I know this will always be part of who I am as I will always be passionate about teaching and will continue sharing knowledge, mentoring, and coaching, etc. I ventured into the corporate environment as I excelled with my financial skills and thought that my career would entail the chartered accountant route. I did the required academics, got the job and my focus was numbers and more numbers. Again, I was challenged because my love for people was not satisfied. I once again did a complete change in my career by studying, job shadowing and taking on projects in the learning and development and human resource departments. One of my memorable periods was asking the CFO of the organisation to give me the opportunity to split my job in two areas to show my capabilities and therefore be considered for a position that was eventually created for me. This was exciting and I thrived in this environment. I felt like I was adding value as the position focused on the growth and development of the youth, once again. I knew that I could accomplish more and add more value through venturing out on my own. I started my own business which offers the services of learning and development, strategy, human resources and finance. This has been an exciting journey with many challenges.
I have been involved in the music industry for the better part of my life. As a performer and creator, I have had the opportunity to entertain many people over the years. I have a great passion for music and the arts in general. As an avid reader, I take great pleasure in immersing myself in the prose of those who are highly skilled in the literary arts. This stood me in great stead when I embarked on a course in Journalism a million years ago. Although I never completed the course, certain skills have stuck with me to this day. My journalistic endeavour was eclipsed by my musical passion. A passion that has given me much joy and also lead to much heartache. Nonetheless, being a staunch collector of music, it wasn’t long before I utilised this collection, and branched out into spinning records on dance floors around the country. Having grown up in Cape Town, South Africa, in the ‘80s, I was embroiled in the struggle for freedom. Battling the apartheid regime. This struggle, which was so much a part of everyday life, gave me a sense of something bigger than myself. A sense of community and belonging to something that was more important than my own personal well-being. Generally speaking, I would like to believe that I am an artist at heart. When I say that I don't mean that I like to draw or paint or any of the other physical manifestations of art. What I mean is that I approach life as art. If that makes any sense. I am the proverbial Jack of all trades. Master of a few. I think my biggest asset is that I am always willing to learn. That is something that I intend to keep doing until the last breath escapes my body.
Live and love as if there is no tomorrow! Hi, my name is Emmerentia. I was born in the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa, in the ‘60’s, which means that I'm an original, retro hippie chick at heart with the good, old-fashioned values to back it up. The highs and lows I’ve dealt with in life have taught me a valuable lesson…time is not guaranteed and is therefore not to be lost. I am enjoying my journey, still learning new life lessons and growing to become the person I am meant to be. I must pay tribute to the University of Experience and the School of Hard Knocks for the valuable contributions you have made to my life path thus far. Stronger. Wiser. Blessed. My passion is to help others to reach their full potential. It is even more difficult to do that in one’s own life (it’s so easy giving advice to others, isn’t it?) but making a direct contribution or figuratively planting a seed and watching it take root in someone else’s life is deeply rewarding. We are on this planet to live good lives and to make a positive difference to our direct environment, wherever our feet may fall. Aim for the stars; never forget your roots. Be yourself, stay humble, be kind, be grateful, make love an action…not a word. My mission is to help people from all walks of life, gain financial independence, while caring for the world around us. Learn how to earn. Make sure you have a meal, an income, clothes, a home and good health. There is no planet B. I’m a big fan of renewable resources, organic gardens and farming and hugging a tree. Helping our paw-legged friends in shelters, finding furever homes much faster. Same for birds, horses, donkeys, circus prisoners and liberating zoos. I am an excellent chef in my kitchen 😊 and I love baking (to put it mildly). My cakes and tarts are wickedly good and not being gluten intolerant is still my highlight of the previous decade! My downtime is spent walking, jogging, going to the beach, horse riding and playing golf. With over 38 years’ combined experience, accumulated by time spent in the corporate world and having 3 businesses over the years, I have a wealth of experience to share and utilize. Words, in a personal bio, aren't plentiful. Not to me, at least. I feel that the chances of someone reading about what your opinion is of yourself and BELIEVING it is remote. The tough part is that you don't know me, nor I you, yet I'm trying to “convince” you that what I say is who I am as a person and that what I say is what it is. The eyes are windows to the soul…that isn't exactly happening here, and that sense cannot always be replaced through words alone. So, the moral of the story is that what I list below as my key character traits, strengths, weaknesses, achievements, experience, etc. is in reality simply just that. Traits: Dedicated, honest, loyal, trustworthy, tenacious, dependable, creative, methodical, sense of integrity, ethical, tough but fair, empathetic, lighthearted and friendly. Strengths: Comfortable in a team environment or working independently, management, skills utilization, delegation, human relations, conflict resolution, analysis, strategizing, implementation, problem solving, business administration. Weaknesses: Impatience, self-critique, injustice and rudeness stirs my temper, being micro-managed, cheesecake. Experience: Sales, sales management, customer relationship management, business administration, directorship and general management of 3 x businesses previously owned/co-owned. Summary: A self-starter who gets what's required done, pronto. I am self-motivated, enjoy new challenges and try my best to excel at what's before me. I love working with people, as this is simply my passion.
Born and raised in South-Africa by a single mother in humble surroundings. Doing Taekwondo for years and attained my International black belt with the following principles, this was apart of my childhood that guided me into my adult life: Showing courtesy to others no matter what level of society labelled them; training continuously whether I was up for it or not; showing integrity, even when no one was watching; perseverance when I wanted to give up; self control when it was difficult to compose myself and learning from my couch to have a indomitable Spirit. Finishing school it was expected of me to follow in the "Afrikaaner Man's" footsteps to have a job where you work many long hours a day, week in and week out, get your salary, sleep and repeat. My passion for music gave me the confidence to follow my heart and to head towards Cape Town for a short holiday, but I ended up staying here and studied for Audio Engineering, whilst completing my studies and gaining experience in the industry. COVID19 affected the industry drastically and I had decided to use my spare time productively by enrolling in courses such as Social Media marketing and Programming. I also started a small business where I rent out my sound equipment and host small gatherings and events. Helping friends with their business promotions and seeing how people enjoyed the events I have hosted, it made me realize that I have a passion to better others and their circumstances. Following my dreams against all odds lead me to where I am today and to appreciate every single moment by not wondering about the past or worrying about the future. Focusing on the task at hand and having it complete well within the deadline is what I strive to achieve and I love learning and gaining knowledge along the way to further myself in everything and anything I get the opportunity for. I am ready for new challenges and know that having a healthy work balance will help me to reach my full potential.
Greetings to one and all. I am a child of the universe and I want to share that every day is a beautiful day. True, our emotions fluctuate but at some point during each day we will recognise that the day is a gift we have received and if we be true to ourselves we will smile and this will create feel good energy. We should practice this feel good energy and build on it so that each day it comes easier and earlier in the day, like a muscle it will grow. Become more evident and gather momentum and we will BE better for it. I believe in kindness and forgiveness towards others and myself. In a couple of months I will begin the first year of my seventh decade on planet Earth. I feel privileged to have lived long enough to grow. Twenty years ago I was facing a life threatening illness and not doing too well, I am a miracle. I believe we are all miracles. Some would differ. It can be a topic for discussion. I have extensive administrative experience - getting things organised, getting things done. With a stable track record, I am able to diversify within different industries. As part of a team I have a strong focus to resolve challenges and enjoy leaving any tasks I am busy with in a user friendly state (do unto others). I pride myself on my attention to detail & due diligence, going the extra mile in terms of improved efficiency and cost effectiveness. With strong English (both written and verbal) I am confident to communicate at all levels of an organisation, company or institution, with a strong emphasis on service delivery. My good communication skills help towards problem solving & interpersonal relationships. I enjoy taking on responsibility, it adds to my sense of well-being & purpose. I did a one year secretarial course in 1980 and my working life began from there. Living and learning life then became what I did, marriage, babies, etc. I guess I was lazy to further my qualifications, in hindsight I think I would have made a damn good surgeon LOL. Seriously, I have good eye, hand coordination, a good touch, and, consciously, I have become better at threading the needle. I believe strongly in being true to myself and honesty means much to me, honesty within and with others. And now, I am ready to start that next chapter in my career. I am blessed. I have over the years done various short courses including a deep tissue massage course so I am a certified masseuse however I only massage family and friends as I am no longer physically (strength and stamina) up to doing a job I am comfortable to charge for. Thought that was worth mentioning as it brings me pleasure to help others breathe and take time out. I have always worked in administrative support positions from Girl Friday to Executive PA and everything in between and in many different industries. My last couple of jobs have been from home (virtual) and in a new field namely customer service. This shift was challenging and I am proud to say I managed it pretty well. Working from home is what is necessary at this time given my current living circumstances. This change and the challenge that came with it reminded me that I have strong determination which is a very good thing. I am concerned for my granddaughter’s generation and what life will be like for them as adults, especially the environment they will find themselves in physically, mentally, emotionally. And, I would love to see the curricula in our educational systems adapting to educating our children to be more self-aware, mindful, engaging their senses, like an involuntary muscle, in the present moment and, to be able to guide their minds when it comes to EQ. I am an advocate for sports at a young age as this definitely develops our grit and stick-ability which comes in handy as we journey down the road with our name on it. I was a junior champion in both swimming and tennis, representing Zambia in both. Easy does it.

Our Mission is hives before honey. Texas Beeworks is in the business of helping bees and beekeepers thrive. We focus on the health and wellness of the hive, and we manage every Texas Beeworks colony with the mission of maintaining a healthy honeybee population. Our goal is to increase the bee population by placing and maintaining hives across the Lone Star State and by raising awareness about honeybees through education, advocacy, and public outreach. Texas Beeworks offers hive placement and management services, beekeeping classes and education, private lessons for new beekeepers, live bee removals, and more. Texas Beeworks is the most recognized name in bee removals in Texas, and we proudly offer low-cost, bee-friendly, chemical-free honey bee removals in Austin and surrounding areas. Our bee removal work has been featured on CNN, the BBC, on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Ellen Show and more! In most cases, we are able to remove the bees that same day or schedule a time that works for you. Every bee removal is different, but our bee removal plan is always based around what will be the best for the safety of the people who use the space, the general public, and the health and wellness of the colony. Unlike many bee removal companies, we never use a vacuum to remove bees from their hive. And after we remove the bees, they are relocated to one our 25+ bee sanctuaries in the Austin area so that the bees can continue their important work in a place that is both safer for you and for them.
Under The Mango Tree is committed to sustainability, from which all our other values take form. Sustainability means many things to us: from investing in long-term relationships with our partners farmer, customer & supplier to ensuring our practices benefit the environment. Bringing you honey from the various parts of India harvested organically partnered with some of the local farmers, to get it right to your home! Our founder Vijaya Pastala’s passion lies in developing community based, pro-poor approaches for environmentally sustainable economic development in India. With a long career in the agricultural space, she realized that long-term linkages with poor farmers improve quality of life of communities, tremendously. Under The Mango Tree (UTMT) is more than just Organic Honey and Bees. It’s also about people. At UTMT, we’ve always believed in building and empowering a community. Starting from today, we’d like to give you a glimpse into who we are, what we stand for, how we got here and where we’re headed with your support and encouragement.
UTMT Society founded in 2009 is registered under the Societies Act and the Maharashtra Public Trust Act. UTMT Society promotes beekeeping with indigenous bees like "Apis cerana indica" and Trigona to increase agricultural productivity and enhance biodiversity, incomes and livelihoods of marginal farmers in India. Four out of five foods we eat – fruits, vegetables, pulses and oilseeds – require bees for pollination. Honey bees are the most important among all pollinators. Through its work with indigenous bees, UTMT Society seeks to improve biodiversity management and ecosystem services for small holders, a cost effective way to adapt to climate change. This is particularly important for India’s small and marginal farmers, who comprise 86% of India’s farmers. UTMT Society works in tribal areas in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh in India. As of 2019, we have our presence in 175+ villages spread across 14 districts.
The Honeybee Conservancy was founded in 2009 by Guillermo Fernandez in response to the news that bees across the globe were in crisis. In fall of 2020, The Honeybee Conservancy relaunched as The Bee Conservancy to better capture our work protecting all bees and securing environmental and food justice through education, research, habitat creation, and advocacy. As a child immigrant from Cuba, Guillermo grew up in a crowded, multi-ethnic urban area where one-third of the community lived in poverty. His neighborhood, like so many others, was a food desert; fresh fruit and vegetables were near impossible to find, supermarkets stocked mostly processed food, and local restaurants were all fast food chains. There was little-to-no green space, just concrete as far as the eye could see, and the community suffered from rampant health issues that were the result of poor nutrition and degraded environment. Decades later, Guillermo started The Bee Conservancy for two reasons. First, he wanted to help save the bees, who pollinate 1 in 3 bites of food we eat and are vital to healthy ecology. Second, he hoped to find ways to empower underserved communities like the one he grew up in to produce healthy food and build green spaces. Our initiatives, such as our flagship program Sponsor-a-Hive, have served hundreds of thousands of people across the United States, and protected an estimated 10 million bees to date.
We are a group of scientists from various university departments and agricultural experiment stations, and collectively we share expertise in insect pollinators, pest management, analytical chemistry, and economics. We’ve come together on a five-year research project to help environmental horticulture growers navigate how to manage insect and mite pests while protecting bees. We also have a group of stakeholders who act as an advisory board for our research. Our stakeholders include beekeepers, garden associations, crop protection companies, nurseries, a government agency, and non-profits. This website is a place to communicate updates and findings from our research project, as well as a place to provide additional materials for growers and the wider public.

The Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC) aims to maximise the efficient use of industry resources and funds to ensure the long term economic viability, security and prosperity of the Australian Honey Bee industry in Australia. We foster, promote, enhance and protect the interests of the Australian Honey Bee Industry and the vitality of its members and represent industry policy at all levels of government, private enterprise and the public. The Australian Honey Bee Industry Council has established an independently developed and audited food safety program – B-Qual Australia Pty Limited. Detailed information about this quality assurance program is available via the link below. The Australian Queen Bee Breeding program (AQBBP) was established to help the beekeeping industry and having that pool of genetic material lends itself to having evaluations carried out in many areas. For the past 3 years, the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC) and Plant Health Australia (PHA) have been working to implement effective biosecurity arrangements for beekeepers around Australia. Ensuring the honey bee industry has the capacity to better manage established pests, and to have surveillance in place for early detection of exotic pests such as Varroa mite is critical to the future sustainability and viability of the Australian honey bee and pollination industry. Let our founder, Mikaila, explain the origin of Me & the Bees Lemonade: When I was just four, I got stung by a bee and then got stung again less than a week later! Naturally, I didn't enjoy the bee stings at all and I became scared of bees. But then after doing some research about them, I became fascinated and learned all about what they do for me and our ecosystem. Around that same time, my family encouraged me to make a product for a couple of children's business competitions - the Acton Children’s Business Fair and Austin Lemonade Day. So I put on my thinking cap. I thought about some ideas. While I was thinking, my Great Granny Helen, who lived in Cameron, South Carolina, sent my family a 1940s cookbook, which included her special recipe for flaxseed lemonade. So then I thought, what if I make something that helps honeybees and uses my Great Granny Helen's lemonade recipe? I decided to give her beloved lemonade a new twist by adding honey from bees, instead of only sugar. That's how Be Sweet Lemonade was born! However, we had to change the name due to a copyright issue, so we decided to call it Me & the Bees Lemonade because we give a percentage of sales to help save the bees. We are now celebrating more than 10 years in “buzzness!” Mikaila started her lemonade at youth entrepreneurial events and at her lemonade stand out in front of her home, donating a percentage of the profits to local and international organizations fighting hard to save the honeybees. That is why she touts: “Buy a Bottle… Save a Bee.” Now at age 15, her little idea from more than 10 years ago continues to grow and grow...by more than 500 percent since the company’s humble Austin, Texas-based beginnings. Today, the award-winning, ready-to-drink Me & the Bees Lemonades in five refreshing flavors is buzzing off the shelves of Whole Foods Market, The Fresh Market, World Market, H-E-B stores across Texas and Kroger stores in Houston. It is also available at a growing number of restaurants, food trailers and natural food delivery companies. When not traveling for speaking events to share her stories of being a social entrepreneur, leading workshops on how to save the bees, or participating in social entrepreneurship panels, you can find Mikaila coming up with ideas to help the Healthy Hive Foundation, a nonprofit to further help the mission of saving the pollinators.

Realizing the need was bigger than their garage, they moved the business from their home to downtown Hackensack. Since then, we’ve expanded to California, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, Kentucky and Oregon. The Mann Lake family continues to grow to better serve its customers with the addition of Kelley Beekeeping out of Kentucky. New York Bee Sanctuary protects the bees of New York State and across the US through Conservation, Advocacy, Research, and Education. Honey bees and wild pollinators exert a profound influence on the health of our local ecology and farm communities. By pollinating flowers they enrich the biodiversity and stability of ecosystems. Bees are some of Earth's most important organisms, yet they are threatened by habitat loss, pesticides, herbicides and disease. New York Bee Sanctuary protects bees while helping while helping individuals, institutions, parks and cities connect with their environment. We are building a wildlife sanctuary for honey bees and pollinators in New York State, with programs to promote conservation of our vital insect friends all across the US.
The World Bee Project CIC is the first private initiative in the world that remotely monitors bees to research the pollinator and pollination crisis from a global perspective. It supports, connects and amplifies new technologies and scientific study to improve the health and wellbeing of bees and other pollinators. The innovation can play a significant role in helping to mitigate the threats to food security and biodiversity and create predictive models to ameliorate potential future stresses. The World Bee Project is developing data driven innovative solutions that address pollinator health challenges in cities as well as in smallholder farms and agriculture and food supply chains. Intensive farming, harmful pesticides, overpopulation, urban sprawl, loss of floral habitats, deforestation and climate change are all placing devastating pressures on pollinators. The World Bee Project addresses the need to improve understanding of the varying pressures on bees in different regions of the world. The World Bee Project uses Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT), and works with local communities and global organizations to merge social, environmental and economic benefits to positively impact the future of Pollinators, People, and the Planet.
Since its foundation in 2009, the Wheen Bee Foundation has established itself as Australia’s premier, not-for-profit organisation supporting honey bee research and development. Its founder, Gretchen Wheen, was a well-known commercial beekeeper specializing in the supply of quality queen bees for local and overseas markets. Wheen recognised the fundamental link between honey bees and food security, and was concerned about the growing threats to the beekeeping industry. Before she died she donated her farm and other resources to establish the Wheen Bee Foundation, with the aim of supporting and developing research, innovation, training and communication to ensure a viable beekeeping industry and protect our food supply. The Foundation actively works to attract donations to enable further research and innovation projects to achieve its mission of food security through bee security. The Wheen Bee Foundation is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).
The Purple Hive Project is an initiative by B honey and Bega Cheese Limited. B honey is committed to supporting the local honey industry by helping protect honey bees (Apis mellifera) from the significant threat of Varroa Destructor (Varroa mite) arriving in Australia. Varroa destructor is a tiny mite that is crippling honey bee colonies around the world, which could have a devastating effect on our honey industry and Australian agriculture more broadly. Australia is the only populated continent in the world that has not been impacted by Varroa destructor, but its potential arrival in Australia is a very real threat. If Varroa destructor were to establish itself here in Australia, it could have a devastating affect on our honey and pollination dependant industries. Honey bees play a significant role in the pollination of food crops in Australia – some crops are almost entirely reliant on honey bees for pollination. The Varroa mite, which has crippled bee colonies around the world, is threatening the viability of the Australian beekeeping industry. It is estimated that the healthy population of honey bees, and the pollination services they provide could be reduced by 90-100 per cent, with the potential to impact producers of crops such as almonds and apples who rely on the pollination services that bees provide. It is estimated that one in three mouthfuls of food that Australians consume relies on bee pollination. The Varroa mite is a tiny mite that attaches itself to honey bees and honey bee brood to the detriment of the honey bee and the honey bee colony. The Varroa mite is also known to transmit viruses amongst honey bees which can cause defects to the honey bee. The Purple Hive Project has been developed to monitor and send real time alerts to beekeepers and biosecurity if a Varroa mite is detected, allowing them to quarantine the hive and remove the Varroa mite in order to help protect Australia.
Pollinator Partnership Canada (P2C) is a registered charity dedicated to the protection and promotion of pollinators and their ecosystems through conservation, education, and research. Our eco-regional planting guides, Selecting Plants for Pollinators, are tailored to specific areas of Canada. Whether you are a farmer of many acres, land manager of a large tract of land, or a gardener with a small lot, you can increase the number of pollinators in your area by making conscious choices to include plants that provide essential habitat for pollinators. To make this program more widely accessible across Canada, we are currently developing the Pollinator Steward Certification training so that trainees can take it online! Our Bee Friendly Farming (BFF) programs recognize, engage, and support BFF participants and pollinators everywhere. The BFF program has three categories that allow for engagement with all participants in pollinator conservation while addressing their landscape goals: Bee Friendly Farming CERTIFIED, Bee Friendly Farming PARTNER, and Bee Friendly Farming GARDEN. Our Bee Smart™ School Garden and Curriculum Kit is a great tool to teach your students about the importance of pollinators and how they are connected to our food and environment!
When it was first launched, this website was a joint project between Pesticide Action Network and Beyond Pesticides. The site — originally made possible by funding from the CERES Foundation — was part of our collective campaign to support bees and other pollinators being harmed by commonly used pesticides. While our collaborative work continues, this site is now solely operated by PAN. At Pesticide Action Network (PAN) North America, we work to create a just, thriving food system. For too long, pesticide and biotech corporations have dictated how we grow food, placing the health and economic burdens of pesticide use on farmers, beekeepers, farmworkers and rural communities. PAN works with those on the frontlines to tackle the pesticide problem — and reclaim the future of food and farming. Bees are in real trouble. In combination with other factors like habitat loss and disease, industrial agriculture’s heavy reliance on pesticides — particularly neonicotinoids — has contributed to dramatic declines in pollinator populations. Since 2006, commercial beekeepers have reported average annual losses of 29% – 45 %, with some losses up to 100%. This is unprecedented. While federal policymakers remain stuck on this issue, local communities have been stepping up to support bees and other pollinators. Across the country, people are creating pesticide-free “honey bee havens” with ample pollinator habitat and access to fresh water. From backyards to neighborhoods and cities, each haven helps protect the pollinators responsible for one in three bites of food we eat.
Built on land purchased in 2017 in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, New England Beekeeping Supplies, Inc moved into the self-designed, one of a kind facility called The Colony on April 1st, 2019. After running their business from their home garage for 13 years, Rick and Sue Reault opened The Colony. The Colony is home to their family of companies, New England Beekeeping Supplies, Carlisle Honey and now Honeybound Meadery. Their facility continues the 300-year-old tradition of Agriculture on the last parcel of land from the original Thompson Farm started in the early 1700s. The Colony purchased the parcel from the Richardson Family who ran a Dairy Farm from the 1940s to the 1980s. The Colony offers a unique and one of a kind experience with any visit. It is a Beekeeping Facility unlike any other Beekeeping Businesses in the Country. Whether you are a beekeeper looking for support in managing your bees, a honey consumer wanting a variety of honey choices or a person looking for a bottle of mead, the oldest fermented beverage known to man, The Colony is a must visit!
The American Bee Journal was established in 1861 by Samuel Wagner and has been published continuously since that time, except for a brief period during the Civil War. The Journal has the honor of being the oldest English language beekeeping publication in the world. Today, Dadant and Sons has the privilege of publishing the American Bee Journal for subscribers throughout the world. Readership is concentrated among hobby and commercial beekeepers, bee supply dealers, queen breeders, package-bee shippers, honey packers, and entomologists. The Classroom Department of the American Bee Journal has been a popular place for beekeepers of all levels of experience and interest to exchange questions, answers, ideas, comments and opinions for years. Beekeeping questions of all kinds, regardless of experience levels, are solicited and encouraged.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was founded in 1980 and is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way. PETA educates policymakers and the public about animal abuse and promotes kind treatment of animals. PETA is an international nonprofit charitable organization based in Norfolk, Virginia, with affiliates worldwide. PETA opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview, and focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in laboratories, in the food industry, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. They also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered “pests” as well as cruelty to domesticated animals. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. PETA has always been known for uncompromising, unwavering views on animal rights. They aren’t afraid to make the difficult comparisons, say the unpopular thing, or point out the uncomfortable truth, if it means that animals will benefit. The very heart of all of PETA’s actions is the idea that it is the right of all beings –human and nonhuman alike– to be free from harm. Our world is plagued with many serious problems, all of which deserve our attention. Cruelty to animals is one of them. PETA’s “Uncompromising Stands on Animal Rights” is an overview of what sets PETA apart. Their positions may be controversial, but they are always true to their driving mission: to stop animal abuse worldwide. We have the power to spare animals excruciating pain by making better choices about the food we eat, the things we buy, and the activities we support.
We started The Urban Beehive in 2010 with the aim of supporting the honeybees that do their critically important work in urban Sydney. We put beehives in city backyards, businesses, community gardens and on rooftops; from Bondi to Marrickville – even the Botanic Gardens. Across Sydney, the bees are enjoying some great views! And our hives are happy and healthy. But internationally, bees are in drastic decline, with whole populations being destroyed overnight as a result of introduced threats. We’re here to help protect local bee populations against these threats; and to raise awareness of the plight of all our beneficial insects. We do this partly through education with our popular beekeeping courses in The Centennial Parklands. We also do plenty of public speaking and now have a beekeeping shop in Matraville, Sydney where you can buy all your beekeeping needs in one place.
