Join us as we escape the rat race of South East England and settle into farm life in Central Portugal. We are Ken & Gina and we started the OKportugal Youtube channel back in 2019 when we decided to leave the hustle and bustle of the UK for a quieter life on a farm in Central Portugal. We now live on an amazing 3.5 hectare farm along with our cats, Nanook & Mecho and our two dogs, DogDog and Mimosa. Our journey began back in the UK, in September 2019, where we sold our house, packed all of our belongings and drove across Europe to Portugal in our campervan Bob along with our animals. We moved into a lovely rental house, high up in the Serra da Estrela mountains, meeting many friendly and generous locals and spent the next few months searching for our dream farm. In December 2019 we moved into our dream farm during Portugal's worst storm in a decade. We have had many trials and tribulations along the way and have documented them all in our Sunday weekly vlogs for our subscribers to enjoy.

Built on land purchased in 2017 in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, New England Beekeeping Supplies, Inc moved into the self-designed, one of a kind facility called The Colony on April 1st, 2019. After running their business from their home garage for 13 years, Rick and Sue Reault opened The Colony. The Colony is home to their family of companies, New England Beekeeping Supplies, Carlisle Honey and now Honeybound Meadery. Their facility continues the 300-year-old tradition of Agriculture on the last parcel of land from the original Thompson Farm started in the early 1700s. The Colony purchased the parcel from the Richardson Family who ran a Dairy Farm from the 1940s to the 1980s. The Colony offers a unique and one of a kind experience with any visit. It is a Beekeeping Facility unlike any other Beekeeping Businesses in the Country. Whether you are a beekeeper looking for support in managing your bees, a honey consumer wanting a variety of honey choices or a person looking for a bottle of mead, the oldest fermented beverage known to man, The Colony is a must visit!

Our Mission is hives before honey. Texas Beeworks is in the business of helping bees and beekeepers thrive. We focus on the health and wellness of the hive, and we manage every Texas Beeworks colony with the mission of maintaining a healthy honeybee population. Our goal is to increase the bee population by placing and maintaining hives across the Lone Star State and by raising awareness about honeybees through education, advocacy, and public outreach. Texas Beeworks offers hive placement and management services, beekeeping classes and education, private lessons for new beekeepers, live bee removals, and more. Texas Beeworks is the most recognized name in bee removals in Texas, and we proudly offer low-cost, bee-friendly, chemical-free honey bee removals in Austin and surrounding areas. Our bee removal work has been featured on CNN, the BBC, on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Ellen Show and more! In most cases, we are able to remove the bees that same day or schedule a time that works for you. Every bee removal is different, but our bee removal plan is always based around what will be the best for the safety of the people who use the space, the general public, and the health and wellness of the colony. Unlike many bee removal companies, we never use a vacuum to remove bees from their hive. And after we remove the bees, they are relocated to one our 25+ bee sanctuaries in the Austin area so that the bees can continue their important work in a place that is both safer for you and for them.

Villaggio dell’accoglienza (Welcoming village) is the answer for everybody has had anguishing experiences and is forced to live at the margins of society. It is an educational space that through the testimony of given life and laboratory activities allows a path to rehabilitation and re-integration. Thanks to the wonderful area of Lunigiana that touches Liguria, Tuscany and Emilia Romagna they have developed activities connected to apiculture. Il Pungiglione have more than 1000 families of bees and hive products from organic agriculture (propolis, royal jelly, wax) and become a specialized pole able to provide complex services to farmers: wax factory for wax making and wax sheets, wood working that produce beekeeping equipment, consortium honey factory for all the activities connected to honey production and sale. In order to show the extraordinary Villaggio dell’Accoglienza social project Il Pungiglione offers to visitors a new hostel with restaurant and a educational farm agreement with Tuscany Region and many others authorities at national level. We work with respect for nature: all the production activities of the Village exploit alternative energy thanks to the photovoltaic system. Pungiglione’s products are organic, certified by Bioagricert authority. The jewel of the crown of the production is represented by Honey Dop of Lunigiana, the first in Italian honey that obtained the reward, the only one Bio-Dop&Supportive thanks to the great work and efforts led by Stefano Fenucci and his team. Boceda was a dynamite factory, abandoned for many years until our arrival. In 1999 the remaining site dedicated to industrial production was composed by some old precarious buildings suffocated by vegetation. We cleaned and restored the buildings. From that period Il Pungiglione assisted a bloom of social recovery, both human and environmental, that we hope to carry on in the future with strength and determination.

Its founder, Gretchen Wheen, was a well-known commercial beekeeper specializing in the supply of quality queen bees for local and overseas markets. Before she died she donated her farm and other resources to establish the Wheen Bee Foundation, with the aim of supporting and developing research, innovation, training and communication to ensure a viable beekeeping industry and protect our food supply. I’m Toni-Leigh, born and bred in the Mother City of Cape Town. My fiancé and I, are parents to a lively 2-year old girl who arrived 5 years after losing our 3-year old son to a rare genetic disease. I love learning new things. Growing up, I was a voracious reader, reading anything and everything (even the classifieds and property ads) and with the advancement of technology over the years, I can have information at the tip of my fingers, so I’m always eager to learn new things and I’m a fast learner. I’ve always had an interest in Information Technology and was the go-to person in my office before my colleagues would go to the IT office, and now I’m looking into further studies so that I can develop my knowledge and skills. In 2005 I graduated from Varsity College with a Diploma in Travel and Tourism with aspirations of travelling worldwide in my profession. Things didn’t quite work out that way, having worked in retail and a company assisting young people to live and work in the UK. In the last decade or so, I’ve been in the tourism industry behind the scenes, working for an online holiday accommodation booking agency and more recently a company that does tours and safaris in Southern Africa. I also do freelance work remotely, such as, captioning for a speech-to-text service and social media evaluation. I am an introvert but enjoy working with and being in the company of others, while also enjoying being on my own. In the past I used to view being an introvert as a weakness because those higher up in the ranks of the companies I worked for were extroverted but in recent times I realised how much of a strength it is being an introvert as I also have a strong sense of empathy, which I believe is key in Customer Service and building interpersonal relationships with colleagues and clients. I’m passionate about customer service and going the extra mile and l love that feeling of knowing that I’ve made a difference in someone’s day whether big or small. People tend to describe me as hardworking, punctual, efficient, dependable and trustworthy. Covid-19 affected the tourism industry drastically, however, I still want to travel anywhere I can, just soaking up the different cultures and experiences. The last year has been both challenging and rewarding and it has made me see things in a different light and so it has been somewhat of a new beginning for me. I am motivated now more than ever to seek out new passions and adventures and to get out of my comfort zone.

The four main initiatives of IBCP are: Research - This aspect of IBCP continues from the initial research described above and is focussed on the Varroa mite parasite, which is the greatest threat to Ireland’s native honeybee. This study and breeding programme will be entering it’s 5th year at our dedicated research apiaries and laboratory during 2020. Results have been encouraging, where selected colonies are now showing tolerance of the Varroa mite through the expression of natural traits contained within the bee’s genome. Habitat Support - One of the main reasons for the diminishing numbers of certain species of Irish bees have been the reduction in foraging and nesting sites throughout the country. During 2019 the IBCP began a programme to combat this effect and established 20 specially designed “Bee Lodges” to provide shelter and breeding facilities for all species of Irish bees. These lodges were erected in large trees in Fota Wildlife Park and on farms in county Waterford. Wild bees are currently occupying these shelters and will propagate over winter and next year to increase the relevant populations. The target for 2020 is to establish a further 80 lodges in other locations throughout these counties. The Research project will feed directly into Habitat Support, as native honeybees with increased Varroa tolerance will have greater survival rates in the wild when introduced to the “Bee Lodges”. Biodiversity - Along with the reduction of wild nesting locations across the country, the reduction in foraging sites has led to a significant loss of species and range for some Irish bees. The Great Yellow Bumblebee is an example of this, where 60 years ago this species was prevalent throughout the country, but today it is endangered and found only in certain western counties. The IBCP through an education and networking programme are working to increase floral rich areas which are desirable to our native bee species. This initiative is focussed on creating multiple small areas of floral development in private and public areas and links directly into the Habitat Support initiative. This programme involves liaising with government bodies, businesses, farm groups, community groups, schools, hospitals, universities, eco groups etc. Education - IBCP have established a link with the Royal Microscopical Society to secure the use of teaching microscope kits which can be brought to schools to introduce students, (both junior and secondary) into microscopy, insect biology and specific aspects of insect biology associated with the life and survival of native Irish bees. These programmes will be carried out by IBCP in association with the teachers, who will develop curriculum-based projects such as foraging areas to attract bees and demonstrate how bee pollinators can manipulate and carry the pollen which is necessary for the continued survival of the bees. This initiative will enable the students to visualise the links between the bees they see every day and biology involved in the ongoing survival of these bee species. The added advantage to this education initiative is that the students will encourage their families and friends to support the Biodiversity requirements of our native bee species. In summary, the IBCP is working for the survival, protection and proliferation of Ireland’s native bee species. The four elements of our approach are highly integrated and through our growing network of members we plan to expand our initiatives from Cork and Waterford throughout the country over the coming years.
