I grew up in a small farm community in the Eastern Cape. The world I knew then was only what was surrounding me; the farm, farm lands, livestock, bushes and forest and two or three other farm dweller families. That was my reality, no big cities or big townships. I never knew anything about big rivers, oceans, lots of animals, no idea of big mountains etc. When I grew up my parents moved to the city, things changed, it was a total new world. My world got so complex and vast. It was when I started visiting beaches, zoo, animal sanctuaries, visit nature reserves and botanical gardens and travelling by boats, ships and fly in aeroplanes. I am now an avid traveller, I also go for walks in the natural environments, listen to birds singing and so on. The world has so much to offer for those who grab these opportunities. As a family man I often visit with my family to city parks, nature reserves, and lots of community projects that take care of animals and the environment. I am both an environmental and social activist, and I have spent most of my life either being involved directly in the protection of fauna and flora or training those who are involved in the same. When I travel or visit other countries I visit mostly destinations that would offer natural and aesthetic beauty to tourists. I also have a huge interest in climate change as it is, among others, influenced by human behaviour, more especially air pollution. I am also interested in religion, more especially African Traditional religion. The reason for my interest in this branch of religion is because it is mostly nature based. In other words it is religion that does not separate between humans and nature. For the adherents of this religion life is one and God manifests himself through nature and therefore taking care of nature is a religious duty. As an environmental and social activist I am involved either through making financial contribution or contributing my time in community projects of different kinds. These projects would include contributing shoes to primary school learners who have no shoes, contributing money to soup kitchens for crèches and unemployed job seekers and many other projects. I am hoping to sustain these initiatives to a level where they can help more people.

UTMT Society founded in 2009 is registered under the Societies Act and the Maharashtra Public Trust Act. UTMT Society promotes beekeeping with indigenous bees like "Apis cerana indica" and Trigona to increase agricultural productivity and enhance biodiversity, incomes and livelihoods of marginal farmers in India. Four out of five foods we eat – fruits, vegetables, pulses and oilseeds – require bees for pollination. Honey bees are the most important among all pollinators. Through its work with indigenous bees, UTMT Society seeks to improve biodiversity management and ecosystem services for small holders, a cost effective way to adapt to climate change. This is particularly important for India’s small and marginal farmers, who comprise 86% of India’s farmers. UTMT Society works in tribal areas in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh in India. As of 2019, we have our presence in 175+ villages spread across 14 districts.

I’m Toni-Leigh, born and bred in the Mother City of Cape Town. My fiancé and I, are parents to a lively 2-year old girl who arrived 5 years after losing our 3-year old son to a rare genetic disease. I love learning new things. Growing up, I was a voracious reader, reading anything and everything (even the classifieds and property ads) and with the advancement of technology over the years, I can have information at the tip of my fingers, so I’m always eager to learn new things and I’m a fast learner. I’ve always had an interest in Information Technology and was the go-to person in my office before my colleagues would go to the IT office, and now I’m looking into further studies so that I can develop my knowledge and skills. In 2005 I graduated from Varsity College with a Diploma in Travel and Tourism with aspirations of travelling worldwide in my profession. Things didn’t quite work out that way, having worked in retail and a company assisting young people to live and work in the UK. In the last decade or so, I’ve been in the tourism industry behind the scenes, working for an online holiday accommodation booking agency and more recently a company that does tours and safaris in Southern Africa. I also do freelance work remotely, such as, captioning for a speech-to-text service and social media evaluation. I am an introvert but enjoy working with and being in the company of others, while also enjoying being on my own. In the past I used to view being an introvert as a weakness because those higher up in the ranks of the companies I worked for were extroverted but in recent times I realised how much of a strength it is being an introvert as I also have a strong sense of empathy, which I believe is key in Customer Service and building interpersonal relationships with colleagues and clients. I’m passionate about customer service and going the extra mile and l love that feeling of knowing that I’ve made a difference in someone’s day whether big or small. People tend to describe me as hardworking, punctual, efficient, dependable and trustworthy. Covid-19 affected the tourism industry drastically, however, I still want to travel anywhere I can, just soaking up the different cultures and experiences. The last year has been both challenging and rewarding and it has made me see things in a different light and so it has been somewhat of a new beginning for me. I am motivated now more than ever to seek out new passions and adventures and to get out of my comfort zone.

“Fall down seven times, stand up eight.” A Japanese proverb close to my heart. It has helped me persevere in so many situations in life and those situations have molded me into the woman I am today. Here’s a brief introduction to who I am. I am a new mommy to an adorable baby boy. A jack of all trades. I’m an artist at heart, fitness enthusiast, avid reader, and quite academic. I was born on the 9th of August in the year 1996 in Elim, a small village in the Limpopo Province. I have always been one to participate in almost every extra-mural activity since my primary school years, I played softball, hockey, and cricket. I took part in cross-country and district athletics to name a few. My love for sports made me gravitate towards what I currently do part-time, I train on a regular basis, and I am a wellness coach and a distributor for a prominent nutrition brand. A large part of what I do involves helping people correct their nutrition and learn more about the benefits of healthy eating so that they can lead a healthier lifestyle and feel great while they are at it. I have been involved in various projects that involved giving back to those in need. I have been involved with an initiative called Feed a Homeless Homie, where we made food for the homeless and distributed it at least one weekend a month, I also helped a friend of mine with a pads drive for less fortunate girls, I also give clothes to homeless shelters for women and children whenever I can and I worked with an NGO known as Keep That Gold Shining (KTG) where we tutored young kids in high schools in the townships. I am a philanthropist at heart and believe that even the smallest contribution goes a long way. As mentioned I am also an artist, mostly self-taught. I do painting on commission as well as pencil sketching. I do not have a specific style as yet but most of my work features women from different walks of life. Since its foundation in 2009, the Wheen Bee Foundation has established itself as Australia’s premier, not-for-profit organisation supporting honey bee research and development. Its founder, Gretchen Wheen, was a well-known commercial beekeeper specializing in the supply of quality queen bees for local and overseas markets. Wheen recognised the fundamental link between honey bees and food security, and was concerned about the growing threats to the beekeeping industry. Before she died she donated her farm and other resources to establish the Wheen Bee Foundation, with the aim of supporting and developing research, innovation, training and communication to ensure a viable beekeeping industry and protect our food supply. The Foundation actively works to attract donations to enable further research and innovation projects to achieve its mission of food security through bee security. The Wheen Bee Foundation is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).

We started The Urban Beehive in 2010 with the aim of supporting the honeybees that do their critically important work in urban Sydney. We put beehives in city backyards, businesses, community gardens and on rooftops; from Bondi to Marrickville – even the Botanic Gardens. Across Sydney, the bees are enjoying some great views! And our hives are happy and healthy. But internationally, bees are in drastic decline, with whole populations being destroyed overnight as a result of introduced threats. We’re here to help protect local bee populations against these threats; and to raise awareness of the plight of all our beneficial insects. We do this partly through education with our popular beekeeping courses in The Centennial Parklands. We also do plenty of public speaking and now have a beekeeping shop in Matraville, Sydney where you can buy all your beekeeping needs in one place.

The Natural Beekeeping Trust was formed in 2009 in response to the need for an alternative approach to the care of bees. The key aims of the trust are disseminate information about bee-centred, natural beekeeping, develop new understandings and ways of relating to the bee that work with the natural behaviour of the creature rather than the enforced and stressful behaviour seen in conventional, chemical-dependent, beekeeping. The Natural Beekeeping Trust is delighted to be collaborating with partner organisations in Turkey, Holland and Macedonia on a two-year international sustainable beekeeping project funded by Erasmus+. We will document existing practices that focus on sustainable and bee-centred husbandry during field visits in partner countries, and will develop online resources and training opportunities for beekeepers and farmers. The Trust is governed by the UK Charity Commission, with which it is registered as a not for profit organisation. We encourage attention to the real nature of bees, their nesting preferences, their forage needs and their all-encompassing purpose. We hope to inspire people to live in peace with the bees, be good hosts to them, guard them and grow for them, in all ways imaginable.

BGO (the Bee Girl Organization) is a grassroots non-profit, centred on bee habitat conservation through research, regeneration, & education. They envision a future where kids frolic in pastures of flowers, buzzing with bees, alongside profitable family farmers and ranchers. Through their research projects and education programs they are regenerating soil, bees, and communities. Organization founder, Sarah “Bee Girl” Red-Laird, leads a team to show kids, bee-keepers, and farmers how to love their bees through classes, events, summer camps, and habitat projects. The team engages with communities across the nation, and the globe, spreading knowledge and bringing a sense of wonder from the hive to the people. Sarah Red-Laird is a graduate of the University of Montana's College of Forestry and Conservation and the Davidson Honours College with a degree in Resource Conservation, focused on community collaboration and environmental policy. Sarah also serves as the “Kids and Bees” program director for the American Bee-keeping Federation. To see her commitment to good policy and community collaborations realized, she also has served as president of the Northwest Farmer's Union and Western Apicultural Society, and as a board member of the National Farmers Union. At the 2015 Northwest Farmers Union Conference, Sarah became inspired to work with farming and ranching friends to find the best possible "win-win-win" solutions for farmers and ranchers, and bees and bee-keepers. This journey led to regenerative agriculture, and the understanding that rebuilding soil is the first step to healthy bees, livestock, and people. The “Regenerative Bee Pasture” project is a multifaceted initiative comprised of research, technical discovery, and community education. They are working hard to develop a low maintenance and inexpensive flower-rich "regenerative bee pasture" for ranchers to both substitute for chemical fallow, and to interplant in pasture for an environmentally and economically improved area for farmers and ranchers to harvest or graze. They also hope to provide a strong nectar flow to feed bees and provide a honey crop for bee-keepers. The Bee Girl organization manages and tests two pasture test plots, and one working pasture, with the guidance and partnership of their collaborators at Diamond Bar Beef, Eastern Washington University, Washington State University, Oregon State University (honey bee lab, and local extension), and the Jackson Soil and Water Conservation District. They analyse bee, soil, pollen, and plant material chemistry, biology, and microbiology. They aim to develop a hardy pasture mix and land management system that can rebuild soil, restore water cycles, sequester carbon, provide high levels of protein for livestock, and also abundant nectar and nutrient-rich pollen for bees. As part of this project, they are experimenting with innovative farming and ranching equipment and methods to improve soil such as rotational and adaptive grazing, no-till seed drilling, and roller crimping. After the research and development phase, they plan to create and implement educational programming for site prep, planting, irrigation, and harvest or grazing, to maximize benefits for bees, bee-keepers, and farmers and ranchers. With the Regenerative Bee Pasture project, they are exploring ways to increase community resiliency through diversity on multiple levels - microbial diversity (bee gut, soil, and pollen), bee species diversity, ecological landscape diversity, food system decentralization, and perhaps most importantly, exploring the human connection to our own minds to increase inner-resilience for the greater good of all. The “Bee Friendly Vineyards” pilot program began in April of 2019. With the help of their squad of volunteers, they launched their program by planting 1,800-square-feet of Siskiyou Seeds sunflowers on a plot of previously unused land at a local vineyard. Their sunflower plot attracted bees, provided vital habitat to pollinators and other beneficial insects, and stabilized and built soil. Recent studies have indicated that sunflowers increase bees’ resistance to pathogens and parasites. Bees provide one out of every three bites of food that we eat. No bees, no food, no us. It's also a commonly known fact that our bees are in trouble. Annual losses of honey bee colonies are in the tens of thousands. Solitary and bumble bees at are being lost at unsustainable rates. It will be up to the next generation to not only understand their importance, but to take action in their conservation. Their “Kids and Bees” program teaches kids, in a positive and engaging way, why bees are essential to everyday life and how the kids can be honey bee heroes. The mission of the Kids and Bees program is to educate the next generation on the importance of bees and to inspire them to take part in their preservation and conservation.

The Honeybee Conservancy was founded in 2009 by Guillermo Fernandez in response to the news that bees across the globe were in crisis. In fall of 2020, The Honeybee Conservancy relaunched as The Bee Conservancy to better capture our work protecting all bees and securing environmental and food justice through education, research, habitat creation, and advocacy. As a child immigrant from Cuba, Guillermo grew up in a crowded, multi-ethnic urban area where one-third of the community lived in poverty. His neighborhood, like so many others, was a food desert; fresh fruit and vegetables were near impossible to find, supermarkets stocked mostly processed food, and local restaurants were all fast food chains. There was little-to-no green space, just concrete as far as the eye could see, and the community suffered from rampant health issues that were the result of poor nutrition and degraded environment. Decades later, Guillermo started The Bee Conservancy for two reasons. First, he wanted to help save the bees, who pollinate 1 in 3 bites of food we eat and are vital to healthy ecology. Second, he hoped to find ways to empower underserved communities like the one he grew up in to produce healthy food and build green spaces. Our initiatives, such as our flagship program Sponsor-a-Hive, have served hundreds of thousands of people across the United States, and protected an estimated 10 million bees to date.

I was born in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha), South Africa. I’m an outgoing person who is both introverted and extroverted depending who I’m with. I enjoy meeting and interacting with new people because I believe this is how you learn and grow as a person. I’m forever looking for new adventures or challenges. I’m a go-getter, never afraid to fail because we learn more from our failures and build character from them. I believe one is never too old to learn something new things. “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” doesn’t apply in my life. I enjoy the outdoors especially hiking, which has exposed me to some of the most beautiful hiking trails in South Africa. I also love taking game drives and explore our nature especially the animals in their natural habitats. I haven’t had the opportunity to travel beyond the borders of my country. Hopefully one day I’ll travel the world, meet different people and get to experience diverse cultures and cuisines. I had dreams of becoming a medical doctor but due to financial difficulties I settled for a National Diploma in Biomedical Technology. At least I got to work in the medical environment with doctors and other medical personnel for about 5 years. I realised that working in a laboratory was not suitable for my personality because I love people, I enjoy interacting with different people. I enrolled for a Diploma in Marketing and that led me to the pharmaceutical industry where I combined both my medical background and the marketing qualification. I worked in Sales and Marketing departments. I also had the opportunity to turn my passion for fashion into a business adventure and started my online clothing store which was a very exciting and challenging adventure. I learned a lot about importing and e-commerce. When motherhood happened and I took a break to become a stay home mom. I got involved in fitness and nutrition business. I realised that the entrepreneurship bug has got me and needed to empower myself to avoid mistakes I made in my previous business adventures, that is when I decided to register for a BCom degree in entrepreneurship via Unisa, which what I’m currently busy with. I am also teaching English as a foreign language online on freelance basis. I plan to also learn one or two foreign languages as I plan to travel the world in the not-so-distant future. I’m excited about the future and learning more in this university of life.

In 1873 the Carniolan Association for Prudent Beekeeping was established in Ljubljana, which represents the beginning of the organisation of the Slovenian beekeepers. Since 1898, they have been publishing the technical magazine Slovenian Beekeeper (Slovenski čebelar). Today, the beekeeping organisation is known as the Slovenian Beekeeper’s Association. It includes 207 beekeeping societies and 14 regional beekeeping associations, with a total of about 7,500 beekeepers. Its main tasks include the education and training of beekeepers in the framework of lifelong learning, publishing the Slovenian Beekeeper monthly and various technical books, the preparation of exhibitions, discussions and symposiums, the organisation of school clubs, beekeeping camps and workshops, raising the public awareness about the importance of bees in the preservation of the environment, the promotion of bee products in healthy nutrition and the list goes on and on. Slovenian Beekeeper’s Association (SBA) is also registered as a Research institution. Within the institution operate four different researchers and three technicians. The Unit participates in research projects, which are mainly from the field of providing safe bee products, protection of Carniolan bee and technologies of beekeeping. Within the institution operates a laboratory for analysis of bee products and, when needed, even a different number of bee colonies, which are intended for research. Since 2007 every third Friday in November, Slovenian beekeepers have been organising an educational-promotional campaign for kindergarten and primary school children entitled “Honey Breakfast”. On this day, children have Slovenian honey for breakfast (it is mostly donated by various beekeepers). The idea for the educational-promotional campaign stems from the Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association, which now presents an initiative to establish the “European Honey Breakfast”. TheBreakfast in Slovenia has been supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. Honey Breakfast is based on a collaboration of beekeepers and teachers and is co-ordinated by the Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association and Public Advisory Service on Beekeeping. Every year, beekeepers societies from local areas collect honey and most of it is donated to kindergartens and schools. Also, an educational publication is published and distributed among children. Besides beekeepers who are in charge of presentations and children’s workshops, mayors, various officials, athletes and many other prominent figures are present at the Breakfast too. It is supported by the media as well; they publish numerous articles and thus raise the awareness of the public on the importance of beekeeping.

My Bio will tell you about my past and present. The past is important but nothing is more important as the present ME! The Beautiful and strong ME! The ME that makes the people who know and love me happy to be in my presence, the present me is what matters. My values and morals and my way of thinking are what is important, the past was just the "making of", the preview one see's of movies and series, the past is an ancient scroll where most of my life is narrated by my parents, teachers, siblings and the other significant people who come and go from one's life, My present is the true picture of what I am and who I am so let me give you insight into who I am: I am a straight talker yet I am loving and a helpful person who is always willing to learn new things, I follow rules only when it makes sense and is fair. I was born to a mixed-race couple in the "old South Africa (during apartheid)" while the political climate was unstable and in its rebirth stage, my mixed-race background has made me culturally rich. Ancestrally I come from a diverse lineage, I have a Scottish and Irish father, a mother with little french a little Indian (Afghan and Pakistani), I have a little of everything, which has made me the odd one out as I look different from the rest of my family, I do not fit in with the brown people, I do not fit in with the white people and there is nothing wrong with that I do not need to be labeled to feel like I belong, I am one of the reasons why our country is known as the rainbow nation a mix and mashed beautiful product of all that is good. My personality and likes have made me the odd one out and the weird one, luckily my husband is just as weird as I am, I always tell him my weird matches his weird, it makes us a perfect match, we were made for each other destined to be together almost as if it was written in the stars, a destiny fulfilled with a happy future in the ahead of us. Happy and together forever and always, I still find it hard to believe that there is someone out there who not only gets me, who understands me, my way of thinking, and the way I view the world but most importantly who LOVE'S ME for ME! I consider myself spiritual and not religious although I was raised catholic and attended a convent where a lot of who I am today was made. The making of ME! The sisters of mercy and catholicism had the opposite of the intended effect on me I am not deeply rooted in the catholic faith, even though I had many lovable and amazing teachers and friends who made my school days worthwhile. Religion does not make sense to me and I consider much of it to be untrue, designed and shaped to manipulate and to rule the masses or one could say those who prefer not to think for themselves who would rather be sheep and led to the slaughterhouse willingly. My philosophy is this: as long as I love myself and my neighbor I believe I'm living the right way and try to instill those principles and values in my two sons. I believe that knowing and giving Love encompasses all the values needed to live a healthy life, Love naturally breeds, respect, forgiveness, and mindfulness. Love means living from the heart when one lives from the heart it naturally voids the ego, the ego destroys the manically malevolent whereas the heart creates and builds, Love is a tool with which one can build a life rich in emotional health, enlightenment, and mental stability. Love is my church, love is my essence and if ever I am in doubt I read up on the writings left to us by all the great masters, Jesus, Muhammed, Buddha the Dalai lama and so many more masters, some of whom are more modern and still living and basically all their writings convey the message of Love. So this me and there is more to me than what is written here, but what is written here is more than enough to get to know me better.

Born on outskirts of Belgrade – Serbia in family of 4. Immigrated to South Africa in 1991 “running away” from civil war. At the end of the August this year I left my last position of Regional Sales Manager of EXIM International. I am a 26-year-old woman, born and raised in Johannesburg where I have lived my entire life. One of my biggest aspirations is to travel across South Africa and eventually the world. Although I was bred a city girl, my heart lies at sea. Another one of my aspirations is to own a home along the South African coast, within walking distance to the beach. I have been known as a bookworm since childhood. I always preferred to have my nose in a book rather than watching cartoons, hence my passions are reading, writing, and editing. Taking my love for books into account, I decided to study English literature, linguistics, and journalism. I have a great love for animals, and I currently have four dogs and a cat. I also love being out in nature. I am always keen to go hiking, take a trip to the beach, or take the dogs for a walk in the park. Another one of my interests is fashion. I have my own sewing machine and often create clothing for myself. I believe we are all responsible for our actions, and we decide where we want to go in life. I think if you want to do something, and you believe you can do it, you can. All you have to do is put in the effort. Nothing comes easy, but if you put the work in you will achieve your goals and be anything you want to be. This is something I live by. I also think that building relationships and being able to work with others is extremely important. Succeeding in your endeavors often depends on how you work with and treat people, not just on what you can accomplish on your own. I have only started my journey, but I am looking forward to experiencing new things, building good relationships, and making the most out of every situation or opportunity.

The Purple Hive Project is an initiative by B honey and Bega Cheese Limited. B honey is committed to supporting the local honey industry by helping protect honey bees (Apis mellifera) from the significant threat of Varroa Destructor (Varroa mite) arriving in Australia. Varroa destructor is a tiny mite that is crippling honey bee colonies around the world, which could have a devastating effect on our honey industry and Australian agriculture more broadly. Australia is the only populated continent in the world that has not been impacted by Varroa destructor, but its potential arrival in Australia is a very real threat. If Varroa destructor were to establish itself here in Australia, it could have a devastating affect on our honey and pollination dependant industries. Honey bees play a significant role in the pollination of food crops in Australia – some crops are almost entirely reliant on honey bees for pollination. The Varroa mite, which has crippled bee colonies around the world, is threatening the viability of the Australian beekeeping industry. It is estimated that the healthy population of honey bees, and the pollination services they provide could be reduced by 90-100 per cent, with the potential to impact producers of crops such as almonds and apples who rely on the pollination services that bees provide. It is estimated that one in three mouthfuls of food that Australians consume relies on bee pollination. The Varroa mite is a tiny mite that attaches itself to honey bees and honey bee brood to the detriment of the honey bee and the honey bee colony. The Varroa mite is also known to transmit viruses amongst honey bees which can cause defects to the honey bee. The Purple Hive Project has been developed to monitor and send real time alerts to beekeepers and biosecurity if a Varroa mite is detected, allowing them to quarantine the hive and remove the Varroa mite in order to help protect Australia.

We are a group of scientists from various university departments and agricultural experiment stations, and collectively we share expertise in insect pollinators, pest management, analytical chemistry, and economics. We’ve come together on a five-year research project to help environmental horticulture growers navigate how to manage insect and mite pests while protecting bees. We also have a group of stakeholders who act as an advisory board for our research. Our stakeholders include beekeepers, garden associations, crop protection companies, nurseries, a government agency, and non-profits. This website is a place to communicate updates and findings from our research project, as well as a place to provide additional materials for growers and the wider public.

Pollinator Partnership Canada (P2C) is a registered charity dedicated to the protection and promotion of pollinators and their ecosystems through conservation, education, and research. Our eco-regional planting guides, Selecting Plants for Pollinators, are tailored to specific areas of Canada. Whether you are a farmer of many acres, land manager of a large tract of land, or a gardener with a small lot, you can increase the number of pollinators in your area by making conscious choices to include plants that provide essential habitat for pollinators. To make this program more widely accessible across Canada, we are currently developing the Pollinator Steward Certification training so that trainees can take it online! Our Bee Friendly Farming (BFF) programs recognize, engage, and support BFF participants and pollinators everywhere. The BFF program has three categories that allow for engagement with all participants in pollinator conservation while addressing their landscape goals: Bee Friendly Farming CERTIFIED, Bee Friendly Farming PARTNER, and Bee Friendly Farming GARDEN. Our Bee Smart™ School Garden and Curriculum Kit is a great tool to teach your students about the importance of pollinators and how they are connected to our food and environment!
